JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER PRESENTS THE WORLD PREMIERE OF “TRANSFORMATION.” Grammy-winning composer and saxophonist Ted Nash’s exploration of “transformation” (from chaos to order, darkness to light, hatred to forgiveness) began with actress and close friend, Glenn Close, curating written pieces by everyone from poet Ted Hughes to playwright, Tony Kushner. The resulting composition will be performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, featuring Wynton Marsalis; with excerpts read by Close, who will be joined by Amy Irving, John Cameron Mitchell, and Nash’s son Eli (who will read the letter in which he came out as a transgender man). From January 30─February 1, 2020 at 8:00PM; Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater. Tickets at jazz.org.

Watch Nash and Close talk about the making of “Transformation”.

IT’S THE 96th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST WINTER OLYMPICS. While a major international event today, the first “International Winter Sports Week” was held in Chamonix, France (the same year as Paris’ Summer Olympics) and featured bobsledding, curling, ice hockey and various Nordic styles of skiing. Deemed a success, the event was retroactively deemed the FIRST Winter Olympics. And they continued to be held the same year as the summer games until 1992, when they were moved to alternating, even-numbered years.
